The ayurvedic specialist

Dr Mathai

For the past 20 years, Dr. Issac Mathai M.D. has made Soukya, the holistic centre he founded in Southern India, a tribute to the true tenets of Ayurvedic medicine (the traditional Hindu system of medicine based on finding balance in the body).

Famous for offering panchakarma (a lengthy detoxifying and cleansing process) as well as naturopathy, he treats a wide variety of medical ailments within a beautifully serene setting of 30 acres of exotic trees and flowers, and has hosted a discerning international clientele including Prince Charles and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

For Ikigai, he will be sharing his thoughts on how to live life more healthily, the ayurvedic way.

What gets you up in the morning?
Looking forward to the new day. There are so many exciting things to do.
If you had to describe what you do in a sentence…
Being a Holistic Health Physician means understanding the person on various levels of the mind, body and spirit and providing solutions for wellness and medical conditions.
What makes you an expert in your field?
Deep commitment and belief in what I do. Making use of the knowledge borne from experience and a constant desire to do the best.
When and how did you receive your calling?
As a child I always wanted to be a Physician and Agriculturist which I am passionate about. Now I do both. My mother influenced me with her medical practice. When I started doing meditation in the final year of my medical practice the purpose of life became very clear to me.
What is the most misunderstood thing about your profession?
Lack of understanding of the concept of Holistic Health and traditional medicine. Thousands of years of knowledge of Traditional Medicine is not well accepted in the face of western medicine which was recently evolved.
If there was one thing you could pass on to everyone, what would it be?
Health is not merely the absence of disease but a state of wellbeing. It is the responsibility of every individual to take care of their health through their lifestyle.

“Stop the desire to have more than we need.”

What one thing should we start doing now?
Yoga and meditation, which will give a lot of clarity to all aspects of life.
What is your “ikigai”?
To help people transform their Health and Lives.
